Creatorland, a California-based startup, set out to become the go-to platform for creatives, creators, and influencers by helping them showcase their work, connect with brands, and network within their niches. In early 2023, they brought us on board to lead backend development and systems engineering as they worked toward launching their MVP.
At the time, their backend, built on a Nest.JS monolith hosted on Google Cloud Platform, faced significant technical debt. Issues included inconsistent documentation, poor TypeScript practices, high latency, and an absence of caching or task queuing, which hampered performance. Our task was to address these challenges while driving feature development.
One major initiative was an analytics service that allowed users to connect social media accounts and view insights on a dynamic dashboard. We built this service as a separate microservice, introducing Redis for caching and GCP Pub/Sub for efficient background processing, ensuring reliability and responsiveness.
In addition to improving backend performance, we revamped the CI/CD pipeline, streamlining builds and deployments with Google Cloud Build and Docker. This enhanced the developer experience, reduced deployment times, and enabled faster feature rollouts, including Likes, Notifications, and a Discover Page, which were all lead by Jelly.
Collaborating with Creatorland to design scalable cloud infrastructure, improve developer workflows, and implement feature-rich functionality in Silicon Valley's typical fast-paced startup environment has been a great experience. Our contributions have helped lay the groundwork for Creatorland’s growth, supporting its mission to empower creators all over the world with a robust and reliable platform.
